Palcoyo is an impressive mountain system located in the Cusco region of Peru, featuring colorful rock formations similar to the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) but with far fewer crowds. The unique landscape is the result of mineral sedimentation over millions of years. At an average elevation of approximately 4,800 meters, it offers spectacular panoramic views and rich biodiversity — an ideal destination for nature lovers and hikers.
This circuit showcases three extraordinary natural attractions: the Cordillera de Colores (Color Mountain Range) with over 4 visible rock outcroppings in unusual colors; the Stone Forest (Bosque de Piedras), a natural rock formation shaped by thousands of years of erosion into striking cliff faces and whimsical forms; and the Ausangate glacier (6,380 m) — the highest snow-capped peak in the Cusco region, considered the principal Apu (sacred mountain) since Inca times.
Hotel pick-up from 4:30–5:00 a.m. Drive ~2 hours to the charming village of Cusipata for breakfast and free time. Continue ~1.5 hours to the Palcoyo community (4,200 m), the starting point of the hike.
The adventure begins with a striking view of the Stone Forest and colored mountains. After a guide briefing, the ~30-minute ascent begins through diverse South American camelids and Andean scenery. At the summit: views of the imposing Apu Ausangate. The guide explains the site’s history, a Pachamama offering ceremony is performed, and free time is given to explore and photograph the Color Range and Stone Forest.
Return to Cusipata for lunch. Back to Cusco by ~5:00 p.m.
