Waqrapukara: The Horn-Shaped Inca Fortress
Among Cusco’s archaeological treasures, Waqrapukara stands out as one of the most extraordinary. Located in the province of Acomayo, district of Acos, south of Cusco, this Inca fortress rises at 4,300 meters above sea level at the top of a ravine — a remarkable combination of architectural achievement and breathtaking landscape.
In Quechua, waqra means “horn” and pukara means “fortress.” Local residents, however, suggest the structure’s shape is inspired by the erect ears of an alert llama — which is why many also call it Llamapukara, highlighting the connection with these animals so vital to Inca life.
- Strong winds at the summit. Daytime temperatures up to 23°C; nighttime temperatures can drop to 0°C.
- The trail follows ancient Inca roads (qhapac ñan). Some researchers believe the route was a pilgrimage path. Rock paintings of “llamajpinta” can be seen along the way.
- Best months to visit: May–October (dry season). January–March should be avoided due to heavy rain and difficult trail conditions.
